100 Faces of War Experience will have some paintings on display as part of this group exhibition.  Portraits, both completed and in progress will be on view from August 5-October 23.
Thursday, August 5,  Ash Woolsen will participate in a very public way by having his portrait for the 100 Faces project painted by Matt Mitchell in the Urban Arts Space gallery.  The painting  of portraits is generally done in a quiet and relaxed atmosphere in which the sitter can enjoy a certain amount of privacy while being painted and while the conversation between artist and sitter unfolds.  However, for this portrait, Ash has agreed to make the personal public in order to enrich the dialogue around this very interesting exhibit.  Follow the links below to see more information on some of the other art and projects which will be on display in this exhibition.

On view July 29 through October 23 at the OSU's Urban Arts Space, 50 W. Town St., Columbus, OH 43215

Visualizing the Experiences of War is a project that aims to bring a better understanding of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in a meaningful and accessible way.  In this project local veterans and artists have been partnered and the veterans have shared with the artist their personal stories of war.  The artists of diverse backgrounds use multiple techniques and media including poetry, painting, photography, and sculpture to express the veterans' unique experiences.  The Visualizing the Experiences of War exhibition displays the artwork created through these artist and veteran collaborations.  Curated by veterans Ash Woolson and Erica Slone.

WFCR Arts and Humanities Award

On May 4, 2010, WFCR held the second annual WFCR Arts & Humanities Award Gala at the Log Cabin in Holyoke. Over 200 supporters of the arts came out to celebrate as we honored this year's award recipients, The Springfield Museums, singer and activist Evelyn Harris, and Matthew Mitchell, painter and creator of 100 Faces of War Experience.

The WFCR Foundation Inc. created the Arts and Humanities Award to engage listeners and to acknowledge the people in these disciplines for everything they do to make western New England a vital, creative place for everyone who lives here.

Exhibition on Capitol Hill for US Congress, March 15th and 16th, 2010

The exhibition on Capitol Hill will be held March 15th and 16th.  It will be held in the Rayburn Foyer of the Rayburn House Office Building (click for directions).  The exhibition will be open to the general public from 10am-5pm on both Monday the 15th and Tuesday the 16th.

Rep. Olver, in whose home district the 100 Faces project originated, initiated this exhibition.  With the help of Rep. Olver's office we have arranged special invitations for some members of congress to be honorary co-chairs of this event.

We recieved a great deal of positive response to these invitations for honorary co-chairs.  It is great to see how many of our law makers are ready to take an open and contemplative look at the American experience of war in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Below are the list of honorary co-chairs to this event who have decided to take time to look into the faces of the people pictured here and read what they have to say.

All members of congress will be invited to attend a special reception.

When we created the list of invites for Honorary co-chairs we sought to find a bi-partisan group that had strong interests in the exhibition, either through being from MA (the home state of the project), through being involved in veteran's issues, or through being involved in the arts.

The honorary co-chairs for the exhibition are:

Sen. John Kerry (MA)
Rep. John Olver (MA-01)
Rep. Vic Snyder (AR-02)
Rep. Patrick Murphy (PA-08)
Rep. Tim Walz (MN-1)
Rep. Todd Russell Platts (PA-19)
Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (NY- 28)
Rep. Chet Edwards (TX-17)
Rep. Zach Wamp (TN-3)
Rep. Christopher P. Carney (PA-10)
